April 2019

April, the month of spring! All bright & beautiful, nature's bounty is up in bloom. India enters the summer season. This time, the climatic heat is lower than average but replaced by the politically hot weather.
Yes, the big fat general elections are due this summer in the sub-continent.

The mango pulp industry is busy clearing stocks sooner than before. The new season is due to start in a month's time.
Alphonso mango fruit arrivals start in the last week of April which continues till end May-early June.

Good flowering, followed good quantity of young fruits on the trees, but rains are still awaited.

In an agrarian economy, rains decide the fate of the farmers. If rain prevails, abundant harvest and a win win  situation for all the stakeholders up the vertical. If the crop is below average or a failure, the biggest sufferer is the farmer.
Markets get adjusted to the price fluctuations, but the farmer whose only earning source is good harvest, which if fails, is the worst sufferer. South India as such are arid belts and the ground water situation is poor. Appropriate precipitation is the only source of water.

Therefore, it is of paramount importance to have a conducive weather for good crop, farmers, and overall.

It is a wait & watch situation.

Colours of the Camaraderie

Holi, the festival of colours is the spring festival of India has just been celebrated at the time of spring equinox, while the mercury gradually soars up in the south India. Holi is a festival to mark the victory of good over evil, and to forgive and reunite with brethren.

India is heading to elect its new government in the coming months. Being the largest democracy in the world, the general elections is a big ticket event, politically as well as economically. Volatile markets, surging domestic demand and the Indian rupee has started to strengthen against the US dollar.

Mango season , 2018 was an unprecedented crop when abundant mango harvest started pouring in when half of the season was over, i.e. , in July first week the mango fruit market crashed with high supply and low demand. (Mango season begins in late May and lasts till the 3rd /last week of July) .

Prices dropped to unimaginable levels. But the average cost price of the crop season dropped marginally as the fruit harvest actually started coming in towards the last leg of the season.
Importers have been wary of the market movements, and started to wait for the prices to drop further. Also, noteworthy is that the Totapuri prices dropped along side the Neelam mango prices totally crashed and was available almost for free!
Across the markets, all over the world there are all types of elements existing. A few mango processors wanted to take advantage and mixed Neelam with Totapuri to add complexity in the prices!
This becomes a confusing situation for the importer when the prices range wide up to 25-40% difference in offers from different suppliers!

New crop 2019

Till the 2nd week of March hopes of good normal harvest cheered up the mango pulp industry, while awaiting rains. But soaring temperatures and scarcity of water is gradually drying out the good hopes. It will depend on the  weather and if, in a week’s time rains received the mango belt, there is no reason to worry.

Stocks are moving out yet some trying to hold in the hope of getting good prices if the new crop season 2019 is below normal.

The current situation is to wait and watch.

Fruity cheers!

Pristine Global at the Gulfood, Dubai, February 17 - 21, 2019

Gulfood, the favourite trade event of the Food & Beverage Industry takes place in Dubai from February 17 – 24 , 2019.
This year seen to be better and improved then the last few years when the geopolitik situation in the region has been on roller coaster. Markets seems to be improving after a few years slump.

Pristine Global had showcased its products at the Gulfood at the Indian Government stand called ‘APEDA COMMON AREA’ display in Zabeel Hall 3. The visitor turnout was immensely good and productive.

Hoping for a good market season for the entire food & beverage industry!

A Prelude To The Indian Mango Season 2017

India is the largest producer of mangoes and mango puree & concentrate in the world. The harvesting of commercially pulping mango varieties starts around in April and goes on till mid July. Primary pulping mango varieties are Alphonso, Totapuri and to a little extent Sindhura, Neelum, Kesar among others.

This year seems to be an unprecedented one!
In a normal year the Alphonso mango harvest starts around 3rd to last week of April and continues for about 4-5 weeks. However this year in small pockets, the season has started in around the 1st week of April. Arrivals are yet to pick up. Prices are firm ranging more or less close to last year’s.
Sindhura mango harvest starts around same time as Alphonso and this year a little better and prices are easier than last year. Size of the fruit is smaller than usual due to drought conditions.

Harvest for Totapuri mangoes start around May 3rd week. In some pockets the farmers have already harvested matured fruit and pulping has been done for about 30-40 MT in the 2nd week of April. Now the wait for the actual season is apparent. With the current scenario, looks like the production of Totapuri mangoes will reduce to almost half compared to season 2016. This has happened to due to lack of rains at the time of flowering in the months of January and February.

On the demand side, due to low stock levels, in general demand coming mainly from the ME market. Europe going grim with the stagnant markets, however some inquiries are coming in already.

March 2017: Bloom in Spring

Spring has arrived! Flowers bloom, birds chirping, cuckooing, welcoming the most beautiful month of nature.  Mercury is rising gradually.
Precedently rising temperature year after year, due to changing climatic conditions has been a global pattern.

At the mango orchards, in some pockets, fruits have already matured and reaching the markets. Seems like the global warming is affecting the season. This time we see little early maturity of fruits. Due to absence of rain in the months of January & February, the bloom which gave hopes for a near bumper harvest is seen burnt on the trees. Harvest is expected to be 30-40% of the normal harvest (or even less)  as the current situation prevails.
Overall the harvesting expected to start around the beginning of last week of April for Alphonso mango in south and also in western India.

India celebrated the festival of colours in the 2nd week of March. Holi is a festival which reminds to forgive & forget, embrace brethren and to live with love, peace and harmony. This festival also falls in the last month of Hindi & other regional calenders in India.

Ugadi is the new year for the states of Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh which is on the 29th of this month. Our country is known for its rich cultural diversity. Practically, every 50 or 100 km, there is a distinctive difference in culture, be it language (or dialect), food, or festivals. This is amazing that different parts of the country has different calenders and that is the reason for different new year dates in different states!

Radical changes are coming up….we have already seen it beginning November last year. Yes, India is happening! Keep looking up for more exciting news.

Nutrition Health Processed Foods

Good health, nutrition, fresh are the words which attract attention of the modern consumer while browsing through supermarket shelf.  The aspiring consumer looks out to options to good health.  The food & beverage industry constantly works upon developing  new trends and better  health food options, like processed food with its nutrition intact.

Processed foods provide long shelf life and ensure availability against the seasons. Many fruits & vegetables which are necessarily seasonal but are required throughout the year.
For instance, mango is harvested only for three months, but it is an essential fruit and desired to be consumed throughout the year.

Mango pulp is extracted from fresh ripe mangoes and mechanically sterilised and aseptically packed or canned to maintain the quality. Since this is a natural puree and has no additives, fruit purees  manage to retain good nutrition. Its true that they don’t have total benefits as in the fresh mangoes.  The loss of nutrition, fibre is very little during sterilisation.

Juice manufacturers use the mango pulp or mango concentrate to make mango juice by adding ingredients to suit the consumers’ palate.

Many juice companies are serving their health conscious markets with mango nectar which may be fulfilling the daily intake of vitamins & minerals, fibre, etc., with no added sugar, preservatives or additives.

Storage & Usage of OTS cans

Always turn the can upside down before opening. This will help the pulp to shake well. This will enhance the pulp quality. When stocked, there should be ambient temperature and high temperature should be avoided under all circumstances.

Its natural that there little charring of the pulp inside the can, and should not be mistaken as poor quality or anything of that sort.

The puree/pulp should be used within 1 hour of opening of the can or sooner. Or transfer contents to glass container to store in refrigerator, and should be used within 4-5 days.

Totapuri - King of Mango Pulp Industry Arrives

The month started on a depressing note as the fruit arrivals are low and the opening price is high! As it was conspicuous in the last month already that the Totapuri mango yield is just about 30-40% of the normal harvest! Come mid June and we expect splurging arrivals of Totapuri mangoes for processing....but still arrivals are low....prices are northwards due to the broad gap between demand and supply. Good rainfall this time is impeding the ripening & processing at the factories.

However, one thing to be content with is the Quality. The quality of Totapuri mango pulp this year is superior with signal flavour, bright colour and brix well above 14 degree. Sigh! Some reason to keep up the spirits....Cheers! Booking of orders is slow, as the customers expect the prices to come down.

Newsletter May 2016

Bang!  Bang! Bang!  The king of kings arrives …….!  Yes, you know it right…..Alphonso mango season starts. Initial batches of Alphonso mango harvest start coming in.

Just the beginning,  carries high acidity in the fruit. Prices are high too.  Ripening takes longer than normal  5-7 days. Processing will start when the first batches have ripened. When the season matures, in about a week-10 days time, quality , prices stabilise. Still  no rains in the mango orchards! We start to get concerned for Totapuri mangoes! But we are praying! Hopes are alive. Let’s see, which way it turns out to be.
Expectations of a big crop of Totapuri (bigger than last year) seem to have gradually muted. In today’s position production can be forecasted to be just about 25% of the normal yield which shortens the harvest season.Still about 3-4  weeks to go before harvest, in which rain is an essential and determining factor for the final
outcome of the crop.
Our prayers are on! God bless! :)

Newsletter April 2016

April 2016

Greetings!

We are here at the onset of the mango season 2016!

We are heading into the season with little joy and little curiosity. Curious...as what this year is going to be like? Prices, quality, availability.....yes all these matter to all of us.

Alphonso mangoes are coming up towards the last week of the current month. We expect a good year ahead (at least better than the last year 2015) J

February heralded full bloom  flowering of the mango trees. The whole industry was overwhelmed with the promising mango orchards and rejoicing  to welcome a bumper crop year!

Lo & behold, the month of March showed no trace of water from the skies! It starts to get hotter like never before. Then comes April and still no signs of rain!

Expectations turn south from bumper to just average season! Nostalgic situation – reminding year 2015...God bless us! We are optimist and will come back with good pulp offers.

All the best to all of us!
